During a Texas Windstorm.
If you have pets they should be part of your hurricane preparation plan. Here are some things to consider:
If you will stay at home during a storm, add pet supplies to your emergency supplies. This can include a weeks supply of food, extra water, and any medications the pet requires. If you have outdoor pets bring them in well before the storm hits.
If you will evacuate for a storm
Plan for a place for the pet to stay. If you will be going to a motel or hotel locate some that allow pets ahead of time. They will fill fast in an emergency so make a reservation ASAP. If you will stay with a friend or relative ask in advance if the pet can stay. If not locate a couple pet shelter possibilities, it will be much easier to get information before a hurricane is imminent.
If you will leave the pet at a shelter be sure that the vaccinations are current. Many shelters won't accept a pet without current immunizations. Keep a copy of the vaccinations with your emergency supplies and remember to bring these papers to the shelter. Shelters fill fast so make a reservation ASAP.
Don't leave the dog tied up in the yard! This seems like common sense but many dogs died after Rita and Katrina from this.
Have a suitable carrier for each pet.
Be sure the animal's collar has identification and don't forget a leash.
Have a recent photograph of each pet. This can help to recover your pet if you are separated.
Be careful if you discover pets that are loose after a disaster. Animals can be defensive or aggressive after a stressful experience or injury. If an injured animal must be captured it is best to call the city or county animal control department, they have personnel trained to handle that.
